Stuart Wong first purchased a property through Tommy’s founder, Tommy Heptinstall before the agent had even opened his own independent agency. Twenty-five years later, the investor has bought eight properties, every one of them through Tommy’s, because of the trusted relationships that have been built over decades of buying and selling houses together.
Can you describe the first time you bought from Tommy’s founder, Tommy?
I bought off Tommy early in his real estate career and wanted to stick with him when he opened his own thing. I’m one of these people who stay with their people. Tommy was totally professional and we built a personal relationship. If I ever had a problem, I would call Tommy and his colleagues and they would sort it out.
How has your relationship with the agency changed over the years?
Today, I’m 66 years old and I understand the fundamentals of the property market. It is based on people and trust. What I continue to like about working with Tommy’s agents is they treat you like a person and a valued customer. They know about relationship building. They were important in establishing my property investment foundation, and continue to approach me today with new opportunities.
The family home you live in was purchased 15 years ago through Tommy’s, what was the most memorable part of your home-buying journey?
I was looking for character and location when we found our home in Mount Victoria. What I love about this property, even after a long time living here, is the sun during the summer months. I start work at 4am, so I leave in the dark but when I get home, there is always sunshine.
How has your life changed since buying property through Tommy’s?
Without Tommy’s, I wouldn’t have accumulated the assets I needed to buy the family home in Mount Victoria. They’ve put some reasonably good deals in my direction and are honest and fair in their approach. We know we are all here to make money but they also look after me and continue to give me good experiences.
In what ways has your home positively impacted your family’s life?
We have a real emotional attachment to the place. I lived in Hutt Valley and Stokes Valley my whole life and couldn’t wait to get out of there. While I spend a lot of time in Auckland, Wellington and Mount Victoria will always be my home because it is where all of my friends are.
What advice would you give to someone looking to buy a home?
Property is a big investment and to make great decisions, you need to build trust. Be sure that your agent is giving you good advice because your home is going to be your biggest asset and so you have to make the right decision.
What are some valuable pieces of advice you’ve received from Tommy’s during your property searches?
The first piece of advice is to make your own judgement. Ultimately, it’s you who knows the type of property you want to buy. The second is to work with agents that you trust and take their advice on board. This is especially important if you are working with older salespeople with a lot of experience. They know the market well and will be able to give you insights that will support you to buy or sell well. Ask your agent to be upfront so you know if there are any pitfalls or challenges with the property you are looking at. What I like about Tommy’s agents is they know Wellington so well.
